Tolpuddle Martyrs visit to Shirehall in Dorchester

It has been a very busy week back in our last term together in Class 4.  We started our new topic of the Tolpuddle Martyrs visiting Shirehall in Dorchester to retrace the steps of the six Dorset farmworkers who were arrested and transported for forming a union in 1834.   We learnt about how the trial was biased against the men and then after their sentence marches were held in London to have the men freed.  Eventually, they were pardoned after a petition was signed by 800,000 people – the third biggest petition to be ever signed.   Today, we went to Bridport Library to learn about how a library can support our learning. We found out some very interesting things.

Class 4’s Residential to Budden’s Activity Centre

May 15-17th 2023

This week, Class 4 ventured off to Budden’s Activity Centre near Wareham for this year’s residential.  We spent 3 days and 2 nights at the centre.  The children did not stop from the moment we arrived at 10.30am on Monday until we got back on the bus at 1.30pm on Wednesday.  They had the opportunity to have a go at a variety of activities including; kayaking, canoeing, meg-sub paddleboarding, several different climbing activities, team building and challenges, sleeping in bell tents, and some great food. Which in Class 4’s view is a very important part of their day.  we all came back to school thoroughly exhausted but had the greatest time. Built many memories and was a fantastic way to celebrate the Year 6’s completing their KS2 SATs.

Handball Tournament

The Y6 Handball Team had a fabulous afternoon competing against 4 other Primary Schools. This was the first Handball tournament hosted by SJC School. The team played so well together and finished in 2nd place only losing one game against the winners of the tournament Bridport Primary. Well done to you all.

Unveiling the King’s Coronation Tree

This week, we went back to the Symondsbury Estate to participate in an unveiling ceremony with the Mayor of Bridport of the tree that we planted a few weeks ago.  The tree has been planted to celebrate King Charles III Coronation that will be celebrated in May 2023.  It was lovely to be involved in this project and is something that the children can come back to with their children and grandchildren to say ‘I planted this.’

 Author Visit - 21st April

Visit from Author, Gary Fyles, today.  We worked on our first book by creating the front cover and a blurb.  A writing technique that Gary uses when he is writing.  We enjoyed creating our ideas.
